Amazon thinks all internet users come from United States

March 2nd, 2008

Recently when trying to “Sign Up for Amazon Payments” I had to login and then the form shown to me had only United States as an option. Couldn’t find an explanation for this anywhere. My account as my Thailand address listed. Why does amazon force me to accept that I am from US? Or is it that they seriously believe that people outside United States don’t use the internet?

Extract info from flickr using Flickr::API in Perl

March 2nd, 2008

Today i learnt a neat trick. It it took me more time to make the script than it would have taken me to do the task manually.. the old fashioned way.. but it would save me(and hopefully you) a lot of time in the future. Flickr does have a nice API with many methods, almost everything which can be done via flickr website can be done using this API. You would need to have a Flickr API key to use this script.

The objective : To generate some html code based on the images in one particular set in my flickr account and to display them in a nice manner(well better than earlier ;) ) using Lightbox2

I am not going to go into details on how to use Lightbox. This page is detailed enough. Read the rest of this entry »

SEOs Dance with Google - Tuesday 26th Feburary 2008

February 27th, 2008

Yesterday was Google Dance day and the SEOs are perhaps still dancing today (Tuesday in US). Some say that page rank is useless, but i tend to believe it has some relevance. At least it is an indicative of the link authority of the site.

First noticed it yesterday evening(early a.m. in US) when BarCampBangkok homepage showed pagerank 4. This was a direct jump from no rank. This is the result of loads of Bangkok based Geeks linking to BarCampBangkok from their blogs and sites. I too am guilty of providing a site wide link :)

Another surprising change I noticed was our travel portal. Until yesterday, it had no page rank. The site has had site wide links from my other sites. Until a month ago all it had on it was meaningless Lipsum, I’ve been adding content to it only since 5 weeks ago and it is a slow and painful process. But the bottom line is site wide links from 2 domains can get a site’s homepage to page rank 5?

Pagerank updates may not have finished, the results mentioned here may change. In the last Google Dance my news site also jumped from 0 to 5. Thank you Google.

Drupal vs Joomla - The SEO viewpoint - Part 2 (Meta Tags)

February 26th, 2008

This is the Second part of my side by side comparison of Drupal and Joomla from an SEO viewpoint. In the first part i wrote about Search Engine Friendly URLs, this part will talk about meta tags.

Meta tags are an important part of the web page. They are used to pass information to browsers and bots and are not intended for the average browser to see. We will basically discuss about the 2 most common meta attributes which are keywords and description.

In Joomla, The editing of the meta tags is a core functionality, and can be added while editing or creating content.

Joomla Meta Editor

Also note the “Sect/Cat/Title” button. when pressing it it automatically adds the Section name, Category name and the title of the content into the Keyword attribute.

In Drupal, the meta attributes cant be set by default, you would need to install a module such as “Meta Tags” to do this for you.

Drupal Meta Editor

This is the box while editing a node.

The meta editor in Joomla is a core feature, however as Drupal is very flexible, i can perhaps get it to include the taxonomy terms into the keyword without replication as well. Both the CMS does well in this simple but important factor. The Joomla people had to put in all these features into Joomla, however the Drupal guys only made a platform where anyone can make modules for any specific task. Based on my initial observations, Drupal module development is easier compared to Joomla extension development. Read the rest of this entry »

Google Adsense text ads in Youtube’s embedded player?

February 25th, 2008

Today while searching for photography tutorials, i landed up on Cameratown’s tutorial page. Surprisingly, there was a contextual text ad for “Canon Flash Photography” on it. Wonder if it is a new phenomenon, searching on Google would only lead me to articles/posts about the adsense video ad units. Take a look at the image below, it shows the adsense text ad within the video.

Adsense text ads in youtube video

Is this something Google is doing to monetize Youtube or there is some involvement/share of Cameratown in this case? On refreshing the page I couldn’t get the ad back, neither have I seen this ad unit on other embedded youtube videos. Lucky that I took a screen shot in time.

If you have any more info on this phenomenon then do let me know.
